Cider Vinegar has Been a Family Tradition

By Dane Kasimir-Cruz

My family has kept cider vinegar in the house for a long time. It started with my great-grandparents and their apple orchard. They made all kinds of things from the apples, including cider and vinegar with the left over peels. It was used in every room in the house for cleaning and insect repellant and then as a medicine too.

My grandmother used the cider vinegar all the time. She used it so much, we used to just call in "the stuff." We would be playing a game orsosmething and grandma would yell to bring the stuff. She used it to clean up new puppy accidents and cure my uncle's sore throat. There was never a visit she didn't need the stuff for one thing or another.

My mother did not like the stuff. The family tradition almost stopped with her. She told me she was sick of the smell and had used it so much as a child she would not keep it in her house as an adult. When my brother was suffering with tonsillitis one spring grandma had to step in and bring some stuff for him to gargle with. He had been miserable and not able to swallow. After a nice long gargle, he was feeling much better.

After that, mom would go get some stuff if the need came up. She bought a whole gallon of cider vinegar when there were big carpenter ants all over the kitchen one summer. We mixed it with some water and wiped everything down. Mom even mopped the floors with it to keep them from coming back in.

Spring cleaning was another time there would be the stuff in the house. This was grandma's doing though. She would come over for a few days to help get everything in the house shiney and fresh. She would start with the bathrooms. Everything got sprayed and wiped with the stuff. It would get rid of any bad odor and make the faucets and shower walls gleam.

When I went into the army, using the stuff came in very handy for barrack inspections. Other platoons would end up having to spend a free day or two going back over things the Sergeant felt were not clean enough. After the first week of having to redo everything on a Saturday I brought out the cider vinegar and we got to work. Our rooms never looked and smelled better. We did not have to stay in on Saturdays after that.

Now that I am married with kids of my own, I keep a nice supply of the stuff on hand at all times. I keep some premixed with honey for a cough syrup and some premixed with water in spray bottles for quick clean ups. In tha pantry is a gallon of it just waiting to be used.

There is nothing like cider vinegar. It is an inexpensive cleaning agent for almost every type of surface I use it for laundry too. It is non-toxic, so I do not have to worry about crawling kids or pets. It has great medicinal properties. I think my kids have seen enough proof of its value to be sure to keep it in their homes some day too.
