Houses and buildings used by marijuana growers are referred to as grow ops. If the grow op isn in a house it's called a grow house. Police estimate that there are more than 50,000 grow ops across Canada.
There are more grow ops every day. No community is safe from them. They can be found in every city, town and rural setting across the nation. North, south, east and west, they are everywhere.
Grow houses are often located in residential areas, but the can also be found in commercial and agricultural locales. Sometimes they are clustered together, sometimes even on the same street.
Growers are learning new techniques and tricks all the time. Crop sitters will reside in the house to make it look lived in. Sometimes they even put families in to make it look even more normal.
While rented dwellings have been preferred sites police have discovered that some grow ops are taking place in houses purchased for the purpose. Some new homes are even constructed with purpose specific rooms designed to contain mold, humidity and smell.
They also vary in size. From thousands of plants in a strata warehouse or barn to a few under the stairs, there is no norm. Police discovered what they consider the largest grow op in Canadian history in January 2004 in Brampton. It had 25,000 plants! Worth millions, this was not a typical grow operation.
While the industry is present in all parts of the country, BC, Quebec and Ontario are the largest producers. Techniques change from area to area. In Quebec 60% of the crop is outdoor, while in BC 70% is indoor.
Because thre is a lot of money to be made marijuana growing has become widespread. relatively speaking the risks are quite low. Punishment is negligible. It has, as a result, become a million dollar industry.
As this growth has occurred organized crime has taken a more prominent role in the industry. A small initial investment can produce a huge return from plants that can provide three to four harvest per year. With the popularity of the drug and the increasing acceptance of it we can be safe in assuming grow ops are here for a while.
