Discover The Health Benefits Of Taking Strontium For Osteoporosis

By Dr. Dennis Clark

Many people suffering from weak bones are discovering the benefits of taking strontium for osteoporosis. This naturally occurring trace mineral, found in both water and many food sources, has delivered promising results in a number of recent trials. When taken as a concentrated supplement it has been proven to have unique bone strengthening properties.

Most people are aware that minerals like calcium are important in developing and maintaining strong bones. However, they are less aware that the metabolic functions involved in processing calcium also lead to a re-uptake of bone cells. In other words, it can only do so much good. Strontium differs radically in that it can increase skeletal density whilst simultaneously preventing that re-uptake.

A three year, randomized, double-blind study, recently published in a respected journal of medicine, revealed a number of positive results. Those women in a group given a daily 680 milligram dose of the supplement suffered 41 percent less vertebral fractures than those in the placebo group. Furthermore, over that period vertebrae density in the experimental group was increased by 11.4 percent.

Impressive as this is, the study does not stand alone. Other research projects have also revealed similarly positive results. It would seem that clear evidence is pointing to the therapeutic effects of the mineral in preventing osteoporotic fractures. This is good news for those suffering from this debilitating condition.

In spite of the positive indications, patients should remember that supplements are not substitutes for treatment. This is not a cure-all that will rid them of the condition, but rather an additional weapon in the fight against bone weakening. They should continue with other therapies, and should not ignore the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and undertaking weight-bearing exercise.

Before taking supplements patients should read the labels and follow the guidelines. This mineral is most beneficial when taken on its own. If it is taken at the same time as a calcium supplement some of the positive benefits will be compromised. However, it is still important that patient continue with calcium supplementation. The effect of strontium on immature bone tissue is not yet known and therefore it is not recommended in treating children.

Whilst there is much evidence supporting the positive effects of taking strontium for osteoporosis, it is important that patients consult their physician before taking the supplement. They will be able to offer advice on safe and appropriate dosage and usage. Supplements should always be purchased from a reputable supplier.
