You Don't Need to See Your Chiropractor Twice a Week - Or Do You?

By Steven Schram

When you are living with discomfort or pain in your back, joints, or neck, one appointment to correct the issue may not cut it. Despite this, many patients are under the misconception that a chiropractor will schedule them for appointments every week and charge them limitless amounts of money for treatments that they don't even need. Doing so would both be an ethics violation as well as a betrayal of the chiropractor's goal of accomplishing treatment in the most simple and natural way possible.

Chiropractic schooling largely focuses on the ability of the body to heal itself naturally after injury or misalignment without the need for medications and outside treatments. The number of weekly visits to a chiropractor that are needed to achieve healing are determined by a number of different variables. The purpose of each appointment is to allow the patient to regain his or her full range of motion and painless lifestyle.

Whether your pain is chronic or temporary, of course, has a lot to do with the number of visits you might require. Another factor is also the amount of time that the vertebrae has been misaligned. Muscles and the slippery soft tissue that surrounds the joint is adversely affected when that joint is out of place. The muscles protect the misaligned joint by stiffening, which can make it harder to realign. The joint can be placed back into position in the joint cavity once the muscles are stretched and can move more freely.

Chiropractors always want to avoid causing their patients additional pain through treatments so they may very well choose to have several chiropractic appointments instead of just one so as to gradually treat the misalignment. Although it might be tempting to visit a general practitioner for just one visit, remember that he or she will simply prescribe a drug that may mask the cause of the pain by alleviating the discomfort but cannot actually address the root cause. Despite the medication, the symptoms of the misalignment will inevitably reoccur and another visit to the doctor will be required.

In order to heal the misalignment and permanently relieve the pain, the patient should schedule an appointment with a chiropractor so as to begin a path of true healing. At the first chiropractic appointment, the practitioner will discuss your symptoms and needs in order to perform an evaluation of your condition and develop a treatment plan. Although the appointments are typically significantly longer than those scheduled with a general practitioner, the chiropractor will be able to listen to your symptoms, determine the cause of the discomfort, and immediately begin the required treatment to realign the joint. Although the chiropractor may require that you attend a follow-up appointment or even several, the majority of patients will only require a few and not a lifetime of commitment to a chiropractor treatment regimen.
