Alternative Healing Modalities For The Body

By Sharlene Fleming

Natural healing therapies focus on the total person; body, mind and spirit. The health of all three is essential to the overall wellness of the person as a whole. While all of these elements are essential to human well-being, trying to absorb the essence of alternative healing modalities of all three at once would be a great undertaking, and so we will begin with the single aspect of physical health.

Aromatherapy is the science of using the olfactory senses to induce a desired physical reaction. Herbs and floral scents are frequently used in aromatherapy. Common applications for this type of alternative healing include the reduction of stress, relief of depression, and as a natural sleep-aid. Aromatherapy can be applied in a variety of ways, from scented candles to bath salts to direct inhalation of essential of fragrances infused into oils and lotions.

Acupuncture promotes a state of physical wellness by relieving targeted points of pressure as well as balancing the body's energies. People with an aversion to needles may prefer to try acupressure, which doesn't involve the actual insertion of needles, but rather direct pressure applied to the target area. Acupuncture is generally reported to be painless and is an effective treatment method for a variety of chronic conditions including stress, headaches and allergies.

Alternative healing therapies recognize the importance of a person's flow of energy around and throughout the body. Reiki massage is a form of physical therapy that deals with restoring a healthy flow of energy by removing energy blockages, which are often associated with physical conditions within the body. Reiki massage sometimes includes hands-on contact, but the majority of energy work occurs in the vibrational field surrounding the body and therefore requires no actual physical contact.

Yoga is beneficial to the body, mind and spirit, regardless of performance level. In other words, beginners can experience a similar level of benefit as those who are more advanced or experienced in the discipline. Because the benefits of this type of exercise are so readily evident, yoga has become increasingly popular. Related disciplines such as tai chi are gaining popularity for their health benefits, as well.

Chiropractic care centers round promoting proper spinal care. This includes restoring (if necessary) and maintaining proper spinal alignment, which has been linked to a variety of health issues extending far beyond just back and neck pain. A healthy spine is an essential part of a healthy body overall. This fact has been recognized for centuries in Eastern medicine, but is just beginning to gain proper recognition in other parts of the world.

Many of us think of herbs as something we use to flavor our food, but their purpose is much more important that that. The scope of benefits offered by herbalism goes largely unrecognized outside the holistic medicine community, though it is being increasingly added to more traditional wellness routines. Medicinal herbs have their own individual healing qualities and can be administered in a variety of ways.

Many additional options exist in the world of holistic health care. These include alternative healing modalities which cater not just to the physical self, but also the mind and the spirit. For an optimum state of overall wellness, a particular combination of these modalities must be used in harmony with one another for the greatest good of the patient.
