Electronic smoking - boon or a bane?

By Greg Norman

Electronic cigarette has become a topic of debate these days. One set of people believe it to be relieving tension related to health. To another group it is just a money making strategy and is not daring enough to survive in the society. Yet again, there is another set of group whose beliefs and thoughts are more important than any other person regarding smoking and that set consists of the health officials.

The ill effects of electronic smoking are yet to be proven. At present, the main concern of the health authorities is what effect inhalation (either direct or indirect) of nicotine vapour would have in the long run on our health.

The Food and Drug Administration has done a lot of research on about 19 varieties of electronic cigarettes from which they have found out that few of them that claimed to be free of nicotine had the same drug in their cartridges. Again, due to imbalance in the flow of nicotine vapours the smokers ended up smoking unequal amounts of nicotine with every puff. After a thorough study of all these results they got, the administration has released an issue that discouraged the use of e-cigarettes.

The American Association of Public Health Physicians has rather a positive frame of mind for the issue. They looks at it through "the glass is half full' mentality and states that e-cigarettes it better than the regular ones because they at least do not pose cancer threats caused by tobacco smoking. However, they do not support the sale of the product in their states. Canada also exercises a similar view towards e-cigarettes and even entertains the sale of the product in its markets in place of conventional cigarettes.

World Health Organization also has a positive view and considers e-cigarettes to be effective and safe compared to the regular ones. However, they still do not believe that it is appropriate for the quitters. They would be able to place their assumptions forward only after clinical studies. Meanwhile they also said that e-cigarettes would remain a tobacco product as long as they do not get a medical tag.

Electronic cigarette is a topic that can put a person in a dilemma. It has its own good and bad as well. What one must look for is how it replaces the traditional cigarette and what are the benefits compared to the traditional cigarettes. Electronic cigarette is made to replace traditional cigarettes and is not merely another tobacco equipment. Looking at this aspect of e cigarette, it would be fair to conclude that electronic cigarette is a boon to the smoking society and is something that people should adopt instead of risking their health smoking the traditional ones.
