The Truth About Genital Warts

By Kingsley Jones

The genital warts are also referred to as venereal warts or condyloma acuminate. They refer to the specific types of warts that develop on the genital areas in men and women. In men, they mainly present themselves in form of gray or fresh colored blisters on the penis. In women, the blisters are similar to those in men but they are mostly found on the vaginal opening. The genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted viral infection. You should seek treatment very quickly when you notice the symptoms of genital warts.

Any person who engages in careless unprotected sex with strangers or commercial sex workers is at very great risk of contracting genital warts. There is a 60% risk of contracting genital warts in the very first sexual encounter with an infected person and without protection. In some very rare cases, the genital warts have been diagnosed in children who are not sexually active. The main cause of those warts is non-sexual contact or sexual abuse.

If a child is positively diagnosed with genital warts, the patient should suspect possible sulk abuse by an adult that is infected. This is so because most, in fact more than 90% of all the genital warts are contracted through unprotected sex with an infected person. The medical statistics tend to show that one in every five persons who are infected by genital warts also suffer from another sexually transmitted infection such as HIV/Aids, syphilis and gonorrhea.

The MAIN CAUSE of the genital warts is the exposure to some types of viruses that are collectively referred to as the Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs). According to the medical research findings, there are over 100 types of such viruses. Only 40 of these 100 HPVs can cause the genital warts. The other types of HPVs cause certain form of cancers (especially the cervical cancer in women) and other types of warts (referred to as the common warts) which mainly develop on the skin.

Over 90% of all the genital warts are caused by the HPV types 6 and 11. The other types of HPVs cause some types of cancers especially the cervical cancer in women. The most common mode of catching or being exposed to the HPVs which cause genital warts is through sexual contact with a person who is infected by the viruses. After the exposure the viruses, there will be an incubation period of about two months and the genital warts are likely to develop within a period of three months from the time of exposure.

There are various symptoms of the genital warts; even though they may not be extremely painful they are seriously bothersome because of their change of the skin appearance, the itching and the psychological trauma that they cause. The genital warts may be small or large. The large genital warts in most cases develop when several small warts join together to form cluster. The blisters cause serious discomfort around the genital areas. In women, the genital warts are mainly found on labia minora and the vaginal opening. In men, they are mostly found on urethra, scrotum, rectal area and the penis.

It is important to note as matter of fact that the genital warts HAVE NO CURE - they can only be treated in order to get rid of the symptoms. The genital warts treatment may completely eliminate the blisters, itching and burning sensation but the viruses will still be multiplying in your body. After infection, you will live with the virus through out your life. To be safe, avoid casual sex with strangers and without protection.
