Understanding How An Aquatic Therapy Device Works

By Paulette Hart

Trends in technology and changing patient needs are shaping medical practice. Today medical practitioners are using the latest methods of rehabilitation. Using an aquatic therapy device is one of the new treatment approaches in use today. This approach is intended to handle severely impaired patients.

Such devices work in water. Water is considered as suitable because there is considerable body weight reduction under water. Higher resistance is also experienced during movement in water as compared to land. Other benefits include the relaxation effects that the body derives from warm water.

Doctors and other medical practitioners attach great value on remedy in an under water environment. This is especially for neurological disorder and stroke patients. Water conditions offer a reduced strain on the muscular and skeletal framework of the patient. This makes it suitable for rehabilitating patients with delicate injuries as well.

Specially build equipments can be placed in pools. Such are used to provide underwater treatment or exercise. These must be designed from rust free material. These devices must also be able to be placed at different depths in the pool to achieve the required results. Some of the well known devices here include underwater lateral exercisers and the elliptical.

Stainless steel has been known to scar and rust under water. As such this material is considered unsuitable for building the structure of such devices. Thermoplastic is the latest material used to build the frames for these equipments.

Achieving a successful rehabilitation session depends on a number of factors. Basically the equipments to be used must allow the patient to stay submerged preferably up to shoulder level. This is because the chest cavity experiences the highest degree of buoyancy. This effect is profitable for effective exercising and remedy. Therefore an aquatic therapy device must be well designed and support optimal mobility in order to be used effectively.
