Can You Use Acupuncture for Infertility

Infertility can be frustrating. You've tried and you've tried method after method, consulted your doctor, got a second opinion, but nothing is working. It's to the point where you're considering any option available. Maybe, now, it's time to consider using acupuncture for infertility.

Acupuncture is a time-honored medicinal art, involving the insertion of thin, sterile needles in specific points on the body. These needles assist in regulating body functions. This is because acupuncture utilizing the interesting science of points known as channels or meridians on the body, which are pathways from the exterior to the interior.

These pathways are manipulated by the needles to help achieve and maintain bodily homeostasis. More specific to using acupuncture for infertility, the needles can be used to stimulate or trigger the thyroid in the event of hypo- or hyper- thyroidism (an under or overactive thyroid, respectively). Acupuncture can also address spasmed tubes, repeated pregnancy loss, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and even male factors like sperm-DNA fragmentation.

It has been reported that in combination with herbal remedies and other medical treatments, acupuncture has been used to successfully treat some cases of infertility. However, you first need to talk to your doctor and accurately diagnose the cause of your infertility before you can know if acupuncture is a viable or beneficial treatment.

If acupuncture does prove to be a viable option, there is a process to be followed. Acupuncture doesn't just turn a patient into a pincushion. Typically, a patient who is going to use acupuncture for infertility will start their treatments three to four weeks before insemination. In clinical and medical studies, this has proven to be the most effective and beneficial starting period. Once conception has happened, most doctors will have the patient continue the acupuncture through week twelve of pregnancy to prevent a miscarriage.

There are specifics points in which acupuncture is effective when treating for infertilty, and points which should be avoided to ensure that the treatment is beneficial. No needles should be inserted anywhere in the abdominal or pelvic region, especially after conception has occurred, or even if pregnancy is suspected.

The greatest plus to acupuncture is the lack of risks and side effects. They've practically non-existent, provided the correct points are utilized (see above). To avoid the slight possibility of a problem occurring, it's critical to seek out and be treated by a licensed acupuncturist, preferably one with experience treating infertility. Going to a licensed acupuncturist also ensures the sterility of the instruments and environment. There's no point in undergoing one medical procedure and having another set of complications arise from it.

Acupuncture for infertility is an extremely safe and viable option for those that have tried other methods with no success. Just be sure to consult with your physician before making any sort of medical decision.
