Pains of Adulthood Prevented by Chiropractic Therapy in One's Youth

By Dr. Andy Thomas

Chiropractic is a medical discipline that helps patients regain, restore and maintain optimum health and may be engaged at any age. Yes, many people are aware as to why adults need chiropractic therapy, but when considering chiropactic care for children the usual reaction is one of almost shock or confusion. Why is chiropractic care for kids such a foreign notion?

Chiropractic therapy is very important for adults yet nonetheless it is also critical for children. We should take a look at the various stresses one encounters over a life-time as providing causation for the reasons why our bodies don't function at 100 %. Children now are facing more stressors at even younger ages that will have an impact on the way in which they develop during the course of their growth if these stressors are not addressed at a young age. So let's take a look at what these stressors can be.

When I say stress I am referencing three general kinds of stress: physical, chemical and emotional. Physical stress, which is what I'll concentrate on in this piece, alludes to any type of trauma or postural abnormality, which can develop from sports or physical motions. But chemical and psychological strain can be equally exasperating. Chemical stress comes from the food your youngster eats, from medications, or any of the environmental toxins to which he/she could be exposed. Emotional stress can be created from any amount of life experiences. All have the same effect on the action of the body, and all interfere with child wellness.

Many spinal issues or misalignments start as early as birth. The birthing process, both natural and caesarian sections, can stress the infant's developing spine and nervous system. As the infant grows, learning to hold up its head, crawling and walking are all activities that certainly affect spinal alignment. As the child begins to participate in regular youth activities, riding a bike or enjoying sports, even more heavy spinal injury can happen. Physical spinal stress can be broken down into macro traumas and micro traumas. Macro traumas are those simple falls, bumps and crashes that children regularly experience and are almost impossible to avoid. Just as importantly, however, are the micro traumas that kids experience and tend to be overlooked. These traumas originate from positional, postural or repeated traumas that a parent wouldn't routinely associate with spinal distortion because they do not cause an immediate reaction from the child. Today, kids are carrying back packs that weigh more then they do, sit at a desk hunched over at school and play video or software games hours at a time. We all know they are not doing these activities sitting straight up with their shoulders back. Most likely we'd see them in the ever more common hunched over position. This relentless slumped posture is causing your kids backbone to slowly break down. If these spinal traumas are not treated it will begin to have an affect on the body's nervous system. Any interference to the nerve system will affect the body's ability to function at its very best.

Many of these micro traumas, especially those related a child's posture or position, can be avoided by correct choices. A pediatric chiropractor is distinctly equipped to help identify areas for correction, and help the parent to address them withthe child, which will have a monumentally positive result on the growth of the child.
