Reflexology For Asthma- Can It Help In Managing the Symptoms?

By Elfe Cabanas

Asthma is a common respiratory disease that normally begins in childhood and progresses through the patient's adulthood. It cannot be cured but its asthma attacks and symptoms can be managed. There have been lots of claims that reflexology can help in managing the symptoms of anxiety. Are there any truths in those claims? Let's discover.

Asthma and Its Nature

Asthma is a respiratory disorder which is normally triggered by the narrowing of the bronchial tubes. The narrowing of the bronchial tubes is usually caused by an inflammation which is prompted by an infection or allergic reaction.

Asthma attacks are normally triggered by emotional imbalances and exposure to irritants and allergens like toxic fumes, dust, pollens, etc. When the allergens enter the respiratory system, the airways in the lungs tend to constrict thereby creating mucus and bronchospasms which blocks the normal breathing of the patient.

Violent coughing, shortness in breath, tightness in the chest, wheezing and coughing are the most common symptoms of asthma. The frequency of their occurrence and severity vary from one victim to another.

Reflexology and Its Effects

Reflexology is administered by applying pressures on the reflex points found on the hands and feet which represent the vital organs of the body. Reflexology helps in relieving stress and eliminating the symptoms of asthma.

Reflexology is believed to be effective in bringing relaxation and calming effects to the human body. By bringing the patient's body into a relaxed state, the patient's breathing begins to slow down and becomes deeper.

Furthermore, reflexology plays a vital role in boosting the health and functions of the respiratory, lymphatic and central nervous system of the human's body. This ancient healing practice relaxes the mind, body and spirit of the patient thereby promoting his overall health and wellness.

When the central nervous system is stimulated, it results to better nerve functions and relaxes the body. Meanwhile, when the lymphatic system is triggered, its significantly increases the patient's immunity against diseases and eliminate his stress.

Stimulating the respiratory organs results to a better and easier breathing rate which benefits asthma sufferers. It even results to better circulation.

Reflexology can also help patients to remain relaxed during asthma attacks. It enables them to breathe easier and remain calm despite of being exposed to stressful situations.

Reflexology is never intended to replace medications in managing asthma attacks and the recurrence of its symptoms. There are limited studies which verify the effectiveness of reflexology in managing asthma. Nevertheless, it is safe to say that reflexology is an effective preventative tool against the recurrence of asthma attacks.
