The Therapeutic Uses Of Oxygen Drink

By Kari Ratliff

Oxygen drink has been in existence for close to five decades now. It was first used by researchers in Russia in the 1960s. The researchers wanted to establish whether it was possible to replenish depleted levels of oxygen through the digestive tract. The cocktail has undergone several improvements to make it easier for everyday use. It is currently used to prevent and treat a number of conditions.

Almost any beverage can be used. This may be a fruit juice (from cherry, raspberry and grapes for example), milk, syrup or even water. One should, however, avoid sparkling and oily liquids because they do not form a homogenous cocktail. This impairs absorption of oxygen and other ingredients in the cocktail. After the addition of the gas, the beverages retain their sweet taste making it easy to consume them.

Some manufacturers may add plant and herb extracts such as rose hip, motherwort, hawthorn and strawflower. Addition of ingredients such as gelatin, egg albumin and liquorice give the cocktail the foaming characteristic. Liquorice is preferred in persons that are allergenic to egg white. Other than being non-allergenic it also has sedating properties.

After being ingested the drink is absorbed through the intestine and enters the blood stream. In the blood stream, it enhances the rate of metabolism, and activates the immune system among other functions. Any other active ingredients are thus easily absorbed due to the enhanced metabolism. Because of the ability to increase metabolism, it is commonly used as a detoxifying agent.

Other very important areas of application of this cocktail include gynaecology obstetrics and perinatology. In reproductive health (gynaecology in particular), it is given to women who complain of inflamed uterine appendages. In obstetrics and perinatology it is used to reduce episodes of hypoxia in the foetus. This helps prevent the risk of intrauterine growth restriction. Women who are carrying high risk pregnancies are advised to have several courses of the cocktail during the gestation period.

Athletes and other fitness enthusiasts may also find it helpful due to its ability to increase the metabolic rate. It helps them to burn fatty tissue and convert it into muscle tissue. This is also complemented by the stimulation of hepatic cells which play a central role in utilization and storage of macromolecules. The athletes are also able to improve their tolerance to exercise.

There are many other areas of application and many more continue to be identified. Chronic fatigue syndrome is reported to be greatly responsive to the therapy. Persons that suffer from this condition report of feeling very energetic after consumption of the cocktail. The cocktail has also been tried successfully for treatment of insomnia, high blood sugar and chronic respiratory tract infections.

Although there are no side effects of using oxygen drink that have been identified, caution should be taken in a number of situations. For instance, persons with bronchial asthma, respiratory failure, gallstones or status epilepticus should not use it as it will worsen these conditions. One will be well advised to seek medical advice before they start using the cocktail.
