Sacred sage for healing and smudging

By Michael Kelley

People have used sacred sage for hundreds of years for a very good reason. Not only does it have all kinds of healing properties but it is also a way to cleanse and purify an area. For hundreds of years the native tribal people have used sage to not only to cleanse their lands but also on the people involved in a ceremony. Science has also discovered that there are antibiotic agents like poly phenol in sage. Some people will boil the leaves and drink it as a tea. Some folk have claimed that the smoke from smudging can help with sinus congestion and migraine headaches.

For hundreds of years people used what nature gave us as a way to heal ourselves and help invoke a more spiritual connection. Sage smudging can help clear negative energy for those who suffer from depression, anger and resentment issues. Other people will say this is all a matter of what is in one's head and there is no real proof that sage does any of these things. While this may be true, some need the physical process of smudging in order to feel healed. Therefore sage can help many people this way.

There are a lot of people who prefer to use the white sage over the desert sage. Some say the smell is less pungent. This may be true, but if you are going to use sage for spiritual ceremonies shouldn't it be the traditional kind for the sacred value alone? Shouldn't we use the native desert sage instead of white sage grown from a nursery? The tribal people only used sage that grew in their lands.

There is also the sacred and blessed value of using desert sage for ceremonies. Many of the native American people still love and honor their sacred lands. To these people every bush, tree, grass or animal that comes from the sacred lands is blessed and is already regarded as a pure source. If this is the case, why change what always worked for thousands of years? Tribal ceremonies are not just flights of fancy but they are taken very seriously.

In Colorado there is a place in the southern region where the land is still regarded as sacred. Tribal people like the Ute, Pueblo, Comanche and Navajo all have a great respect for this place. The name is still whispered as Tsisnaasjini' or White Shell Mountain. It is called the sacred mountain of the East to the Navajo people. There is an abundance of natural cypress and sage that is still handpicked from the valley under the mountain. Many of the tribal people still believe that the San Luis Valley is the place where spirits and humans leave and enter this world. It only seems fair to say if someone is looking to use sage for smudging purposes, then the herb should come from sacred lands like this. Next time you are going to be using sage in a ceremony, think about the blessing and purification factor by using desert sage like this.
