How Moxa Is Used In Chinese Medicine

By Sarah Neuschwanstein

Burning moxa over the skin is called moxibustion. Mugwort is the herb that is used in moxibustion. There are a variety of types of moxibustion.

There is smokeless moxa, there are also little bits of moxa that can be put on the end of the needle. Then there is regular moxa. It smokes a lot and smells like cannabis.

Moxa is used by acupuncturists to relieve pain and add energy to the body. It is used to improve blood flow and can also be used instead of acupuncture. It is very effective to relieve back pain. Moxa spray is another option. The liquid has mugwort in it as well as other herbs.

Moxa spray is used on the back and a heat lamp is used about a foot above the skin. I often add more moxa spray after about 10 minutes. Moxa is very effective to treat back pain. Moxa makes the acupuncture more effective.

Moxa cannot be used on everyone. If you have an allergy to smoke or have hot flashes, moxa might be contraindicated for you.

Hot needle therapy is when mugwort is applied to the needle and burned. The moxa heats the needle and makes the acupuncture stronger. Sometimes the moxa falls off the needle. You have to monitor the treatment as an acupuncturist if you use this method. The Chinese do not mind if the moxa falls off and burns them a little. It has been used for thousands of years in China and they are used to it.

You can easily protect the back by placing a piece of cardboard under the moxa.

Breech babies are very easily turned using moxa on the little toe. There is as acupuncture point by the little toe called Bladder 67 which will actually turn the fetus in breech position.
