Marijuana Growing in Humboldt County

By Castulo Zane

Humboldt County is located in Northern California. It's about 200 miles north of San Francisco. The county seat is Eureka, and there is another good size town there called Arcata. It's one county south of Oregon.

The county has about 1.5 million acres of forested land. It covers terrain from the tops of the Coast Rang all the way down to the beach on the Pacific Ocean. It is the Redwood center of California. It has most of the old growth Redwood left. Most of the old growth is protected from logging.

The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish. They encountered many native groups that had been there for thousands of years. They were joined by Russians and Americans who wanted furs, especially sea otters. Later, Chinese came. Increased economic activity led to more people coming from all over. This was hard on the natives. Violence was not uncommon. There are now 8 reserves in the county for Indians.

Today the big industry is marijuana production. Prop 215 allows people with a medical license to grow 99 plants without breaking any state law. Growers get the cards from doctors who are sympathetic to the issue. Tradition has it that old hippies from the Bay area came to Humboldt and started growing weed many years ago. The cash generated by marijuana underpins the economy. It arises from export to the rest of the country. It is rumoured that radio stations will announce police enforcement programs.

Humboldt County produces lots of marijuana. It supplies a huge portion of domestic demand, and competes with the BC Bud imports which reputedly fuel the BC economy. There is violence that comes with this degree of production, but it's very difficult to say how much. Nobody declares that illegal cash, and the result is that Humboldt is officially very poor.

Law enforcement doesn't push hard against marijuana in Humboldt. Probation is the common sentence. This is not always the case with big commercial growers. Environmental concerns are also starting to become a problem that is being looked at.
